What is ASP Refresher Training?

An ASP is an Accredited Service Provider performing contestable works in the NSW energy distribution network. Anybody with this qualification has already been trained as an ASP Level 1 or an ASP Level 2. So, while you may already have the appropriate training allowing you to work in the NSW network, you still need refresher training to keep your skills up.

ASP refresher training looks slightly different depending on your role and your ASP level, but most courses focus significantly on safety. The details of all course units are shown on this page, but you’ll notice many of them relate to working safely around electrical apparatus, performing rescues and administering first aid in the event of an injury.

While electrical work can be dangerous, modern safety protocols mean there aren’t too many accidents or incidents to deal with. So, you could work in the energy industry for years and not be required to perform a pole top rescue. This is certainly a good thing, but it means you need to refresh your knowledge regularly to ensure you know what to do if an incident occurs.

Who needs ASP Refresher training?

Whether you work as an ASP Level 1, level 2, Level 3, or you’re a civil contractor working in the energy network without formal electrical qualifications, ASP refresher training is still required. If you perform any work around electrical apparatus, this training is paramount.

ASP Level 1s such as cable, pole, substation electrical, tower, and distribution substation workers all require this annual training. ASP level 2s of any category (I, II, II and IV) also require the refresher. Even Level 3 ASP, mostly working on electrical infrastructure design, should complete ASP refresher training.

It’s important to note that even apprentices, trades assistants and other unqualified individuals working in the industry must perform the same rescue type. However, they aren’t eligible to complete UETTDRRF11A, which relates to testing low-voltage electricity networks.

When to book your ASP refresher course

Keeping track of your certification is important because you need to complete ASP refresher training every 12 months. Your ASP certificate expires after 12 months, and you can’t work without it. When working with companies such as Ausgrid, Endeavour and Essential Energy, you need to take ownership of this responsibility.

If you’ve completed training with IAC, simply log onto our portal and check your certificate expiry date. If that date is approaching, you should book a refresher course immediately. Due to the strict safety regulations in the electricity industry, companies can’t take the risk of allowing non-certified workers on the job site.

How to book your refresher training

The great thing about completing ASP Refresher Training with IAC Safety Services is that we make booking the courses you need easy.
