Are you considering working in the NSW energy distribution network? If so, you’ll need to be accredited as a service provider. For certain roles, you’ll need an ASP Level 2 electrician course before you can start work. Let’s learn more about what an ASP Level 2 is, and why accreditation is so important in the electrical services industry.

What is an ASP Level 2?

ASP stands for Accredited Service Provider. In this context, ASPs typically work in the NSW energy distribution network providing contestable works. Their tasks are quite varied and may include:

    • Reconnecting/disconnecting electrical services
    • Installing and working on metering systems
    • Testing low voltage energy networks
    • Installing and maintaining underground services
    • Installing and maintaining overhead services

This list is not exhaustive, but if you want to perform any of these duties in the NSW energy distribution network, you need to be an accredited service provider.

Why is an ASP Level 2 Electrician course necessary?

As mentioned above, the main reason you would complete an ASP Level 2 electrician course is to work within the NSW energy distribution network. Of course, there are various levels of training and these determine the types of roles you can perform.

For example, an ASP Level 1 can only perform a limited number of roles when compared to an ASP Level 2. Typically, Level 1 ASPs can mostly work on the construction and installation of energy works, such as laying cables, erecting poles or working in sub-stations.

A Level 2 ASP, however, can perform all of those duties, plus the ones listed above, such as connecting, disconnecting and reconnecting services and working on meters. Essentially, the higher your level of training, the more job opportunities you’ll have available to you.

    Safety comes first

Another very important reason that people working near live electrical services need accreditation is safety. Australia has long been expanding and refining workplace safety practices, and the electrical industry is certainly no different. The reality is, working with power lines and cables can be extremely dangerous work if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Significant parts of an ASP Level 2 electrician course focus on safety. Whether it’s working on overhead power lines or connecting new electricity services. As such, all participants gain a deep understanding of the safety protocols for working with major energy distribution companies.
