What Electrical Qualifications Do I Need to Be an ASP Worker in NSW?
Becoming an Accredited Service Provider (ASP) electrician in New South Wales allows you to perform specialised electrical work on the state’s electricity distribution network. ASP electricians are authorised to connect and disconnect customers from the power grid, install and upgrade metering systems, and also carry out high-voltage network work. Because of the risks involved, strict electrical qualifications and training requirements must be met before obtaining ASP authorisation.
Understanding the ASP scheme and its levels
The NSW ASP scheme is divided into three levels, each covering different aspects of electrical work:
- Level 1 – Focuses on constructing and maintaining electrical infrastructure, including power poles and substations.
- Level 2 – Authorises electricians to perform service connections, metering installations, and disconnections/reconnections of electrical supply to properties.
- Level 3 – Involves the design and planning of electrical network infrastructure.
An ASP Level 2 electrician is particularly in demand, as they handle essential services for homes, businesses, and industrial sites across NSW.
Minimum electrical qualifications required to become an ASP
Before pursuing ASP authorisation, electricians must meet baseline qualifications, including:
- Certificate III in Electrotechnology – This is the standard qualification for licensed electricians in Australia, providing essential electrical knowledge and practical skills.
- Electrical licence – Issued by NSW Fair Trading, this licence is required to legally perform electrical work.
These foundational qualifications ensure that electricians have the necessary skills before specialising in ASP work.
Training and authorisation process for ASP electricians
After obtaining an electrical licence, electricians must complete additional training specific to their desired ASP level. The training covers key areas such as:
- Safe work practices for high-risk electrical environments
- Network connection and disconnection procedures
- Installation of metering equipment and also service lines
- Compliance with safety regulations and industry standards
Training must be completed with an approved provider, such as IAC Safety Services, to meet the regulatory requirements for ASP accreditation. Once training is complete, electricians must apply for ASP authorisation through the NSW Department of Energy. To be employed, you must also gain endorsement from one of the three electricity distributors: Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy and Essential Energy.
Maintaining ASP authorisation and refresher courses
Holding an ASP qualification is not a one-time process. Electricians must regularly complete refresher courses to maintain their authorisation. These courses ensure electricians stay up to date with changes in safety regulations, network policies, and best practices. Without regular training, an ASP authorisation can become invalid, preventing electricians from legally performing ASP work.
These ASP refresher courses can be booked through IAC Safety Services, and for an experienced electrician, they’re not difficult. The whole idea is to ensure all Level 2 electricians are updated with the most recent industry and safety standards.
