Ausgrid ASP (Accredited Service Provider) Level 1 contractors perform a variety of roles in constructing, upgrading and maintaining the NSW electrical supply network. These skilled professionals work to keep power running to homes and businesses throughout the state. While there are two other electricity distributors in NSW, this article will take a look at what Ausgrid ASP level 1 contractors do, and how you can become one.

What roles do Ausgrid ASP Level 1 contractors perform?

ASP Level 1 contractors are primarily responsible for the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground power lines. Whether it’s extending the network for new developments, replacing outdated infrastructure, or implementing upgrades to support increased demand, Ausgrid ASP Level 1 perform a range of different duties. From cable jointing to building substations, this role is very diverse and rewarding. There are even ASP Level 1 accreditation options for non-electrical professionals, such as crane operators. For these roles, you may also need overhead powerlines training or additional courses.

    Accreditation and compliance

In high-risk environments such as the electrical supply industry (ESI), there are strict standards. From the quality of workmanship to safety regulations, compliance is an essential part of the job. Firstly, contractors must be registered with the Accredited Service Provider (ASP) scheme in NSW. Without this, you can’t work for Ausgrid or the other distributors.

In addition, workers must adhere to the Ausgrid Standards Guide and the Ausgrid Electrical Safety Rules (ESR). These standards ensure a reliable supply of power and a safe working environment for all ESI workers.

Training pathways for becoming an ASP Level 1

As we previously mentioned, it’s essential to become an Accredited Service Provider (ASP) before you can work in the ESI. Ausgrid ASP Level 1 contractors must first complete an ASP Level 1 pathways course. This ensures you have the essential skills and knowledge to work safely around network apparatus.

Once you complete the course, you also must apply for registration with the ASP Scheme, and be endorsed by Ausgrid. If you want to work for Endeavour Energy or Essential Energy as the other distributors, you’ll seek accreditation from them instead. This step confirms your eligibility to work as an Accredited Service Provider in NSW.

Finally, to maintain your status as an ASP, you must complete annual safety refresher training. This compulsory training ensures your safety knowledge and skills are up to date. You can’t remain as an ASP without this refresher training, plus it gives you updated information when standards, practices or safety laws change.
