Low voltage rescue (LVR) training is an essential safety course for workers in the electrical supply industry. Designed to equip participants with the skills needed to respond to an electrical emergency, this training is crucial for anyone who may need to rescue a colleague from a live electrical panel.

As part of broader electrical safety training, low voltage rescue is commonly included in courses that cover CPR, electrical spotting, and working near live powerlines. Understanding the prerequisites for an LVR course prepares you for this critical safety training.

Who needs to complete a low voltage rescue course?

LVR training is a mandatory requirement for many professionals who work near live electrical equipment. This includes:

    • Electricians – LVR is a key safety requirement for anyone handling electrical installations.
    • Electrical spotters – Workers responsible for monitoring activities near powerlines must be prepared to act in an emergency.
    • Crane operators and plant workers – Those working around overhead or underground electrical assets benefit from understanding LVR procedures.
    • Construction and maintenance crews – Any worker who may be exposed to electrical hazards needs to be trained in LVR techniques.

In New South Wales, industry regulations and workplace health and safety guidelines mandate that workers in high-risk electrical environments complete LVR training and refresher courses at regular intervals.

Essential skills and knowledge before taking an LVR course

While trainers design a low voltage rescue course to accommodate various skill levels, participants benefit from having a basic understanding of electrical safety. Some of the key skills and knowledge areas that will help you prepare for the course include:

    • Awareness of electrical hazards and workplace risk assessments
    • Familiarity with personal protective equipment (PPE) and its proper use
    • Basic knowledge of electrical systems and safe work practices

Although these are not formal requirements, having prior experience in a related field can make it easier to understand the practical applications of LVR training.

How LVR training fits into other electrical safety courses

Training providers often integrate low voltage rescue into programs for electrical spotters and workers operating near live powerlines. Because workplace safety is a priority, many employers require workers to complete LVR training alongside other essential safety courses. ASP Refresher training also includes LVR as a key component.

Does LVR training require prior certification?

For most LVR courses, there are no strict prerequisites in terms of prior certification. However, some training providers recommend or require participants to have completed a CPR course beforehand, as CPR is a fundamental part of the LVR process. Employers may also have internal policies requiring workers to hold first aid qualifications before enrolling in an LVR course. Checking with your training provider beforehand can ensure you meet any specific requirements.
