    level 2 electricians

In the complex and massive electrical supply industry, there are many career pathways to follow. Level 1 ASPs, for example, perform the vital work of constructing network assets that transport electricity to homes. Cable jointers perform specialist cabling tasks. And, of course, there are also ASP level 2 electricians who help keep the energy network running smoothly. In this article, we’ll explore what level 2 electricians are and also the types of work they do.

    Who are level 2 electricians?

To become a level 2 electrician, you certainly must follow some specific steps. Firstly, you must be electrically qualified to a degree. To be classified as a Level 2 in the NSW electrical supply and distribution network (ESDN), you need to complete ASP Level 2 training. IAC Safety Services offers this course. It’s a way to gain practical safety skills to enable you to work in the electrical supply industry for companies like Ausgrid, Essential and Endeavour. You must attend annual refresher training.

In addition to holding the necessary experience and qualifications, you must be registered with the NSW Department of Energy and Planning’s ASP scheme. This ensures authorisation to work in the network and also perform the duties of an ASP level 2.

What types of work do level 2 electricians do?

Level 2 electricians are qualified and trained to perform certain roles. While there are different classes within the Level 2 ASP classification, workers can perform tasks such as:

    • Connecting and disconnecting properties from the electrical network: This involves safely linking homes and businesses to the power supply, or disconnecting when necessary, such as during major renovations or demolitions.
    • Installing and repairing overhead and underground services: Whether it’s setting up new connections or addressing faults in existing ones, level 2 ASPs ensure that the infrastructure delivering electricity to properties is reliable and working properly.
    • Metering installation and configuration: Accurate metering is vital for billing and monitoring energy use. Level 2 ASPs are qualified to install and configure various types of meters.
    • Energising installations: They have the authority to officially ‘turn on’ new installations, bringing them to life by safely connecting them to the network.

Why ASP level 2’s are so crucial

The skills and expertise of level 2 electricians are vital in ensuring the safe supply of electricity to homes. Here’s why this job is so important:

    • Safety: Working with the electrical supply network is dangerous. Level 2 ASPs undergo training to mitigate these risks. This ensures their own safety, the public’s safety, and the integrity of the electrical network.
    • Compliance: Electrical work in NSW is heavily regulated. ASP level 2s ensure that installations comply with all relevant standards and regulations. This protects consumers and the integrity of the electrical network.
    • Quality and reliability: Specialised training enables Level 2 electricians to perform work to the highest standard, minimise the risk of faults, and ensure the reliability of the electrical supply.
