    class 2 electrician

A Class 2 electrician completes a considerable amount of training to develop their skills. In this article, we’ll explore the training required for ASP Level 2 electricians in NSW.

What is a Class 2 electrician?

In different fields, the term ‘class 2 electrician’ can have various meanings. However, in the context of the NSW electrical supply industry (ESI), it refers to an ASP Level 2. To work for Endeavour Energy, Essential Energy or Ausgrid, you must be an accredited service provider (ASP). There are varying levels, but a Level 2 ASP works primarily on connection and disconnection services.

The training you’ve completed reflects in your ASP level, which, in turn, authorizes you to perform specific types of work. So, you must choose your ASP training carefully to ensure you’re authorised to do the work you want.

What types of work can a Class 2 electrician do?

We don’t want to complicate things further, but within the ASP Level 2 classification, there are also 4 specific sub-classes.

Class 2A – Disconnect and reconnect at the connection point

    Class 2B – Underground services

    Class 2C – Overhead services

Class 2D – Metering and energising installations

Again, this highlights the importance of completing the right training for your specific job and career requirements.

    Training required

To become a Class 2 electrician within the ESI, you must complete mandatory ASP training. Depending on the type of work you aim to do, there are four different classes within the ASP Level 2 qualification. For example, a Class 2B worker mostly deals with underground services, while Class 2C refers to overhead services. You can, of course, train at the highest level possible to ensure you can perform more tasks. This improves the scope of jobs you can apply for.

IAC Safety Services offers ASP Level 2 Pathways training. You’ll complete various units depending on your existing experience and also your job requirements. There are essentially three training packages you can choose from:

UETDRIS011 – Install and maintain low-voltage underground services

UETDRIS010 – Install and maintain low-voltage overhead services

UEEEL0013 – Install, set up and commission interval metering

If you’re going to the ESI, you can also complete a special unit designed to cover any prerequisites you might be missing.

    ASP refresher training

In addition to the training required to obtain your ASP registration, you must also complete annual mandatory training. This refresher training is designed to improve safety standards on all work sites and is therefore compulsory for all accredited service providers. IAC offers mandatory ASP Refresher training, with several locations and a mobile training unit on the road all year. The training shouldn’t be difficult for experienced class 2 electricians, but it’s essential to maintain your ASP registration.
