Low voltage rescue training is a critical part of all safety training for workers in the electrical supply industry, particularly in NSW. This specialised training provides essential skills that prepare workers to handle emergencies involving low-voltage electrical systems. A low voltage rescue course doesn’t just ensure you meet industry regulations, but it could genuinely save a life.

What is low voltage rescue training and who needs it?

Low voltage rescue training is a course that gives students the skills and knowledge to respond appropriately in emergency situations. In this case, specifically involving low voltage electrical systems. All ESI workers, that is, anybody working as an Accredited Service Provider (ASP) in the NSW electricity network, must be trained in low voltage rescue. This includes electricians but also non-electrical such as crane operators, plant operators, and other personnel in the electrical supply industry.

Core skills taught in a low voltage rescue course

Participants in a low voltage rescue course learn a variety of crucial skills, from safely assessing an incident to administering rescue procedures. One of the main components of the course is training on how to rescue a person in contact with a live low-voltage panel. During this course, you’ll also learn how to isolate the power supply quickly which drastically reduces risk during a rescue.

Typically, low voltage rescue training is just one module (UETDRMP007), which forms part of a larger training program, such as an ASP refresher course or any other safety training that you complete as an Accredited Service Provider.

    Maintaining compliance

Importantly, it is a mandatory requirement that all ASPs have the skills to perform their work safely. That’s why it forms part of all ASP pathway programs and refresher training. So, without an LV rescue course, you won’t be able to register as an ASP and work within the network. All employers in the network must ensure their staff are safety-trained, or face heavy penalties.

There are many workplace safety regulations in Australia, and adherence to them is mandatory. The risk of employers being fined or worse is just too great, which is why there are strict controls in place to ensure all workers complete a low-voltage rescue course.

How refresher courses help save lives

As we touched on, ASP refresher training incorporates low rescue education. ASPs must complete these mandatory courses, which ensure every worker has the most current safety knowledge. Annual training keeps everyone equipped with updated knowledge within 12 months whenever legislation or rescue techniques change.
