Sydney Level 2 ASP Electrician Training Requirements

The NSW electricity supply and distribution network is vast, requiring many skilled operators to keep the lights on for homes and businesses. One crucial role within the network is that of a Sydney Level 2 ASP electrician. From working on underground and overhead powerlines to connecting and disconnecting meters, level 2 electricians perform a variety of different roles. However, their job requires extensive training in order to become qualified.

Initial qualifications and prerequisites

Before you can become a level 2 Electrician in New South Wales, you’ll need to have completed the appropriate trade qualification. This is typically a Certificate III in Electrotechnology (Electrician) or Certificate III in ESI. However, this is just the starting point. Your electrical training meets the prerequisites to complete training specific to working as an Accredited Service Provider (AP) in the NSW electrical supply industry.

It’s important to note that you’ll also need to hold a current electrical license.

ASP Level 2 accreditation training

If you meet the prerequisites above you can enrol in ASP Level 2 pathways training. Completing this training is an essential step for anybody who wishes to register as an ASP with NSW Climate and Energy Action.

These training courses are designed to give participants the skills required to perform certain roles within the electrical supply industry. Level 2 ASP training is available for certain class levels, and this affects the types of work you can perform. It’s crucial to complete the right training to ensure you’re eligible to work in your desired role. The following classes cover:

1. Disconnect and reconnect (Class 2A): Allows you to safely disconnect and reconnect electricity services. This critical task also requires customer-facing work.
2. Underground service work (Class 2B): This training focuses on the installation and repair of underground service lines.
3. Overhead service work (Class 2C): This classification covers the skills required to work on overhead power lines. Includes installation, maintenance, and repairs.
4. Metering (Class 2D): Electricians are trained in the installation and maintenance of electricity meters.

The NSW electricity supply and distribution network is also subject to strict safety standards. Level 2 ASP training ensures you understand all important safety regulations in the network.

Maintaining accreditation and ongoing training

Once you’ve completed your training and followed the administrative steps to register as an ASP electrician, you need to maintain that accreditation. In order to maintain ASP registration, you must complete mandatory ASP refresher training each year.
