level 2 electrician course L2 electrician. level 2 training

If you’re looking to advance your career in the electrical supply industry, becoming an Accredited Service Provider (ASP) Level 2 electrician is a smart move. This qualification allows you to carry out specialised electrical work on the NSW distribution network — including disconnections, reconnections and metering services — and opens the door to a wide range of employment opportunities.

In this article, we’ll outline the key steps required to become an ASP Level 2 electrician in NSW.

    Complete your core electrical qualifications

Before you can start the ASP Level 2 training pathway, you’ll need to become a fully qualified electrician. In Australia, this involves completing a Certificate III in Electrotechnology — the nationally recognised trade qualification for electricians. This qualification is apprenticeship-based, meaning you’ll gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience over a period of several years.

Once you’ve successfully completed your apprenticeship and obtained your electrical licence, you can begin the process of becoming an ASP Level 2 electrician.

Enrol in an accredited ASP Level 2 course

The next step is to complete the required ASP Level 2 training with an approved training provider. This training is broken down into specific classes covering different types of work:

    • Class 2A: Disconnect and reconnect service equipment
    • Class 2B: Underground service work
    • Class 2C: Overhead service work
    • Class 2D: Metering installation and energisation

You can choose to complete one or more classes depending on the type of work you intend to perform. Many electricians complete all four to broaden their skills and employment opportunities.

At IAC Safety Services, we offer nationally accredited ASP Level 2 training delivered by experienced trainers who understand the requirements of the NSW electrical supply industry.

Obtain the required licences and authorisations

Once you’ve successfully completed your training, you’ll need to apply for ASP Level 2 authorisation through the NSW Department of Planning and Environment. This will involve submitting your qualifications, evidence of completed training, and other supporting documentation.

You may also need to meet insurance requirements and register with relevant electricity distributors before you can legally carry out ASP Level 2 work in NSW.

    Complete mandatory safety training

Before performing any work on the distribution network, you must also complete additional safety training, including:

    • UETDREL006 – Work safely in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus as a non-electrical worker
    • Low voltage rescue and CPR
    • Pole top rescue (for overhead work)
    • Controlled descent escape (where applicable)

Many of these units are included in the ASP refresher course and other specialist training programs offered by IAC Safety Services.

    Stay current with refresher training

Once you’ve obtained your ASP Level 2 authorisation, you’ll need to complete periodic refresher training to maintain your accreditation. This ensures you remain up to date with regulatory changes, industry standards and safe work procedures.
