When you work as an ASP level 2 electrician in Sydney, safety training is paramount. It not only gives you the skills to protect yourself on the worksite, but also how to assist others in the event of injury. The electricity supply and distribution network (ESDN) in NSW can be a high-risk environment, further highlighting the need for all workers to receive appropriate safety training. Here are some of the main reasons to keep your safety training up to date.

    Mandatory industry requirements

Before you can work in the ESDN, you must be registered as an Accredited Service Provider (ASP). You also need to be endorsed by one of the three electricity distributors (Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy and Essentially Energy). In order to register as an ASP, you also must complete electrical safety training. For new workers, this forms part of your ASP Level 2 pathways course.

Existing workers must complete mandatory ASP refresher training each year. This ensures your basic safety skills are up to date, such as CPR, working in the vicinity of electrical apparatus, pole top rescue and providing first aid in an electrical supply industry (ESI) environment. Without completing this course annually, you can’t work as a Level 2 electrician in the ESI.

    Keeping all workers safe

Aside from the regulatory requirements, the obvious benefit is that it helps to keep all workers safe from injury. When all ESI workers have appropriate safety training, job sites are much safer. Workplace safety is everybody’s responsibility, which is one of the main reasons the NSW government has made electrical safety training mandatory for ESDN workers. Training keeps people vigilant when it comes to identifying hazards and risks.

    Building a safety-first culture

Any type of ‘mandatory’ training is often met with a groan, but the reality is that it’s all about building a safety-first culture. Nobody wants to see their colleagues injured or get injured themselves. Regular refresher training promotes a culture where safety procedures are part of business as usual. If someone spots a hazard, they can take appropriate steps to rectify it. Workers should also be comfortable making safety suggestions to senior colleagues, and this occurs much more easily in a safety-first workplace culture.

Assist others in the event of an accident

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, if you’re working as an ASP Level 2 electrician in Sydney, there is a strong chance you’ll be working with live network assets. Despite all the training in the world, sometimes, accidents occur. Thanks to your safety training, though, you could be in a position to save a colleague’s life in a rescue situation. Even if an injury isn’t life-threatening, it’s good to know that you can handle the situation effectively.
