    level 1 ASP list

In the NSW network, workers and sub-contractors working with Ausgrid, Endeavour or Essential Energy must be registered with the ASP scheme. This ensures all workers have the relevant training and qualifications to perform their roles safely and competently. However, within this accreditation, there are distinct levels, each with its own set of permissions and restrictions. So, if you’re interested in working in this industry, it pays to know the difference between a Level 1 ASP and a Level 2 ASP. Let’s take a look at some of the restrictions that you may face as a Level 1 ASP.

What is a Level 1 ASP?

A Level 1 ASP is authorised to work on constructing network assets that connect the electrical supply to the grid. These tasks primarily involve the large-scale infrastructure components of the network. So, you might be looking at the installation and maintenance of overhead and underground electricity networks. This role is crucial in ensuring the reliability and, indeed, the expansion of NSW’s electricity supply network.

It’s important to remember that while there are some restrictions, this is still an extremely vital role. Plus, you learn many skills along the way. So, there is nothing stopping you from pursuing further training to explore different career pathways.

The Restrictions of a Level 1 ASP

Within the different ASP levels, there are also classes that determine the specific tasks you can perform. For the purpose of this article, we’ll discuss everything that an ASP level 1 can do. For further information, ensure you research the different ASP Level 1 classes in more detail.

Limited to construction and maintenance of distribution networks

One of the main restrictions is that they focus on the construction and maintenance of the distribution network. Level 2 ASPs can perform disconnections and reconnections, meter installations, and service upgrades, whereas Level 1 ASPs focus exclusively on the larger-scale, structural aspects of the network.

    No direct customer service work

Level 1 employees typically do not engage directly in customer service work, which is often a significant part of a Level 2 ASP’s role. This includes tasks like installing or moving meters, connecting service lines to premises, or upgrading consumer mains. Level 1 work is generally more infrastructure-focused, dealing with the broader electrical network.

    Restricted from live work

Level 2 ASPs conduct live work, including connecting service lines to the energised network, but Level 1 workers cannot perform these tasks. Instead, they focus on construction and maintenance, working primarily on de-energised parts of the network without involving live-work aspects.
