level 2 asp training refresher course

If you work in the electrical supply industry (ESI), you’ve probably heard that you need to complete a Level 2 ASP training refresher course. There are multiple reasons for this, predominantly safety. In this article, we’ll discuss the benefits of ASP refresher training and why you need it for your role in the ESI.

    Mandatory for ASP scheme registration

Perhaps the biggest reason to complete a mandatory level 2 ASP training refresher course is the fact that you need it to maintain registration with the ASP scheme. There are three companies that manage the NSW electrical supply and distribution network: Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy, and Essential Energy. All businesses contracted to these three organisations must be Accredited Service Providers (ASPs). In turn, all sub-contractors and employees must also be ASPs.

As a requirement of the ASP scheme, workers must complete mandatory annual refresher training. Without completing this training, a worker can find themselves ineligible to continue employment within the network.

    Improved safety standards

While some may see the Level 2 ASP training refresher course as merely a mandatory requirement, the reality is different. A major focus of this refresher course is safety. When you work for a Level 2 ASP, you will likely perform dangerous work with both low and high-voltage connections. When dealing with live electricity, there are inherent risks, which is why safety is a huge industry focus.

So, when you complete your ASP refresher training, you keep safety at the front of your mind. You also keep your First Aid and emergency rescue skills up to date. The result is a safer workplace for everyone, and a safer industry as a whole.

    Being ready for an emergency

As we just mentioned, the electrical supply industry is a dangerous place to work without the proper skills and training. Emergencies do occur, and that’s one of the main reasons ASPs must refresh their skills every year. One component of the refresher course is pole top rescue. When people are injured or electrocuted at heights, while working on overhead power lines, it’s crucial that colleagues can act quickly and efficiently.

In ASP refresher training, you also learn about tower rescue, EWP rescue, cable pit rescue and essentially every type of rescue situation you could expect to encounter. At the end of the day, annual refresher training could save your life or the life of a colleague.
