level 2 electrician course L2 electrician. level 2 training

If you’re an Accredited Service Provider (ASP) in New South Wales, your Level 2 training is the foundation of your authorisation. It qualifies you to work on or near the electricity distribution network and carry out disconnections, metering, and service work. But that qualification doesn’t last forever. Like most safety-critical roles in the electrical supply industry, ASP authorisation depends on ongoing compliance — and that includes keeping your Level 2 training current.

Many workers don’t realise their training has expired until it’s too late. In this article, we’ll explain how to check your status, what needs refreshing, and how to stay compliant.

    Check your training expiry dates

Level 2 training is not a one-and-done qualification. Network providers and the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure require that certain components be refreshed at regular intervals — typically every 12 months. That includes:

    • CPR and low voltage rescue (LVR)
    • ASP Level 2 refresher training
    • Rescue units such as pole top or controlled descent, if relevant to your work

If your refresher is overdue, you may not be legally allowed to continue working under your ASP authorisation — even if you’re still on the provider register.

To avoid issues, make sure you track expiry dates in your calendar or keep them on file with your training provider. At IAC Safety Services, we can check your current records and send reminders before you fall out of compliance.

Understand what’s required for each ASP class

Level 2 training covers four distinct classes of work:

    • 2A: Disconnect and reconnect
    • 2B: Underground service lines
    • 2C: Overhead service lines
    • 2D: Metering

If you’re qualified across multiple classes, you need to make sure you’re still up to date in each area. Your refresher may include specific content based on the work you perform, so it’s important to enrol in the right course.

You can find information about each class and upcoming refresher courses on our ASP Level 2 training page.

Don’t wait for an audit to find out

Network providers can (and do) conduct audits of ASPs, especially after incidents or complaints. If you’re found to be operating with expired training, you may be removed from site, have your authorisation suspended, or face further penalties.

Keeping your Level 2 training current is one of the simplest ways to protect your licence, your business, and your team.

Know the signs that your training may be out of date

If you can’t remember the last time you did your LVR, haven’t had a refresher since before the pandemic, or are using a different provider than last time — it’s time to double check.

    Other signs include:

    • Network providers asking for updated documentation
    • Your authorisation card showing an expired date
    • Site supervisors requesting new proof of training

If in doubt, check your records or contact your training provider.
