How to Undertake High Voltage Cable Termination Training
Jointing and terminating high-voltage cables is certainly a difficult and potentially dangerous task without the proper training. In order to perform these jobs, you need specific training that qualifies you to work with high-voltage cables. Due to the safety risks of this type of work, adequate training and certification is paramount. Let’s find out more about high-voltage cable termination training.
What is high-voltage cable termination training?
High-voltage cable termination training is all part of a standard cable jointing course. However, you should be aware of some differences in training types.
IAC Safety Services offers ASP 1C Polymeric Cable Jointing training. This course is designed to help cable jointers obtain the appropriate certification to work within the NSW electrical distribution network.
To complete this specific training, you must meet certain entry requirements. These usually include having undertaken some form of cable jointing or electrical training. We’ll discuss these units next, but the prerequisite units are where you’ll learn the basics of cable jointing that allow you to progress through the ASP 1C Polymeric Cable Jointing training and certification process.
Cable jointing course entry requirements
The ASP 1C Polymeric Cable Jointing training course is made up of three different overarching courses, each comprising several course units. These are listed below:
UETDRDU013 – Joint, terminate and maintain high-voltage underground polymeric
UETDRDU015 – Joint, terminate and maintain low-voltage underground polymeric
UETDRDU016 – Lay power cables
Each unit has a series of prerequisite units you must complete. If you’ve completed another form of electrical training, you may have already completed some of these units. If you’re new to the industry, you’ll probably need more basic training before going straight into the ASP 1C course.
Recognition of prior learning may be available to certain people who hold electrical contractor licenses. Alternatively, if you’ve studied or worked in the industry before, you may be eligible. It’s best to check with your training provider before enrolling just to ensure there’s no confusion.
Who needs this type of training?
Anybody who works with high voltage cables should undertake high voltage cable termination training. This equips them to safely and effectively terminate high voltage cables in the course of their employment.
However, for those wanting to specifically work in the NSW electrical distribution network, they need specific Accredited Service Provider (ASP) training. This course offered by IAC Safety Services includes all the training relevant to this role and also the safety training requirements for registering as an ASP to work in the NSW distribution network.
