Becoming a level 2 electrician is essential if you want to perform specific roles within the NSW energy distribution network. In fact, if you wish to work for an Accredited Service Provider (ASP) within the network, you must be appropriately trained, registered and accredited. For jobs with companies like Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy and Essential Energy, this is a qualification that can take you a long way. Here’s how to go about it.

Choose the work you want to do

You first need to decide what kind of Accredited Service Provider (ASP) work interests you. In NSW, there are distinct categories and levels associated with electrical services, each with specific training requirements. Depending on your choice, you’ll know the exact mandatory units to focus on. Here are the levels.

    • 1: Involves connecting homes and businesses to the electricity network.
    • 2: Permits you to work on the overhead and underground service lines between the electricity network and properties.
    • 3: Design overhead service lines or underground layouts.

It’s also important to note that within the Level 2 qualification, there are classes 2A, 2B, 2C and 2D. Each class allows you to perform certain duties in the energy distribution network.

    Undertake training

Training is essential to be a registered Level 2 electrician. Basically, you’ll have to complete mandatory units tailored to the specific category of ASP work you’re targeting.

Key areas to focus on include:

    • Safety regulations
    • Understanding of electrical supply systems
    • Practical skills for overhead and also underground services

IAC Safety Services provides structured ASP Level 2 pathways, complete with the ideal mandatory and elective units to help you obtain your desired job. Also, depending on your background and training, you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning, but this doesn’t preclude you from the ASP Scheme registration requirements.

    Apply for accreditation

Once you’ve put in the hard yards with your ASP Level 2 training, it’s time to get accredited. You’ll have to approach the NSW Department of Planning and Environment for this. They will evaluate your qualifications and, if deemed fit, register you as an ASP.

Here’s a mini checklist for this phase:

    • Ensure all your training certificates are in order.
    • Provide any required work experience proof.
    • Complete the written application detailing your qualifications and also the category of ASP work you’re applying for.

    Apply for authorisation

With your accreditation in hand, you’re just one step away from the finish line. It’s time to get authorisation from your chosen Electrical Supply Distribution Network (ESDN). Whether you choose Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy, or Essential Energy, each has specific requirements and procedures.

    • Contact your preferred ESDN and inquire about their authorisation process.
    • Submit all the necessary documents, including your accreditation details, training certificates, and also other relevant qualifications.
    • Stay patient. Each ESDN has its timeline, so await their feedback.

Remember, getting authorised by an ESDN not only signifies your expertise but also holds you to the highest safety and quality standards.
