how to become a level 2 electrician

There are many options if you want to work in the NSW electrical supply industry. From construction and labouring to electrical engineers, NSW’s electrical supply and distribution network is always looking for skilled workers. If you can achieve and maintain your status as a registered Level 2 ASP electrician, you could have a range of job opportunities in front of you. In this blog, we’ll look at how to become a Level 2 electrician in NSW.

    Undertake appropriate training

To be considered an electrician, you would typically need to complete a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician or equivalent. This gives you the electrical skills required to be competent in your job. You might choose to do an apprenticeship to become an electrician because this combines practical and formal training. If you’re already a licensed electrician, then you won’t need to worry about this step because you’ll already meet the entry requirements for the Level 2 ASP course.

Complete an ASP Level 2 pathway course

The next step is to undertake specific training for Level 2 electrician accreditation. You can complete these courses with registered training organisations such as IAC Safety Services.

The NSW Department of Planning and Environment approves these courses, and they will equip you with the competencies required to work in the NSW electrical supply industry. All ESI workers need to complete this training.

These courses cover the four different categories of Level 2 ASP work, including disconnection and reconnection, underground services, overhead services, and metering. Tailor your course for the work you want to do as a level 2 electrician.

    Apply for accreditation

Once you’ve completed the necessary training through IAC Safety Services, the next step is to apply for accreditation with the NSW Department of Planning and Environment. To do this, you’ll need to demonstrate your qualifications, experience, and competency in the relevant service categories.

To register as an ASP, you also must meet all other requirements of the scheme, which aren’t limited to training.

    Apply for authorisation

While it might feel like you’re applying to a lot of people for authorisation, there is one more step.
Once you register with the ASP scheme, you must obtain authorisation to work for one of the three main providers. These providers are Endeavour Energy, Ausgrid, or Essential Energy. Choose the one you intend to work for, and apply to them directly for registration. After this, you’ll be ready to work as a level 2 electrician in the electrical supply industry.
