level 2 electrician course L2 electrician. level 2 training

Becoming a Level 2 electrician opens new avenues in the electrical trades, including asset inspection and increased service capabilities. By completing ASP Level 2 pathway training, you will have more employment opportunities, especially with NSW electricity distributors such as Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy, or Essential Energy. This type of career progression doesn’t happen without skills and knowledge, and that’s why this electrical services training is so necessary.

This guide will examine the entry requirements for a Level 2 electrician course, helping you understand the pathway to this valued qualification.

Why is a Level Two electrician course necessary?

A Level 2 electrician course in Sydney gives you the skills to perform more complex tasks beyond those regular electricians undertake. This includes disconnecting and reconnecting the electricity power supply, installing overhead or underground service lines (working on power poles), and installing metering equipment. With this course, you significantly broaden your professional scope in the electrical industry.

To work in the NSW energy distribution network as an Accredited Service Provider (ASP), you need to be registered with the ASP scheme. So, if you want to work in this field, you’ll need ASP level 2 training in addition to your existing qualifications ( such as Certificate III in Electrotechnology). Obviously, working with electrical wires and apparatus comes with risks, and a level 2 electrician course in Sydney helps you work safely and effectively.

The different classes of ASP Level 2 qualification

In the NSW energy distribution network, we divide the ASP (Accredited Service Provider) Level 2 qualification into four classes. Whether you perform installations, repairs and maintenance or inspect electrical issues depends largely on your classification.

    • 2A: Perform disconnection/reconnection at the point of attachment (electricity metering)
    • 2B: Install and connect underground service lines.
    • 2C: Install and connect overhead service lines.
    • 2D: Energising network operator service equipment.

Each class requires specific training and qualification, so the units of competency are different depending on the qualification class you wish to hold. Electrical contractors who work for an Accredited Service provider in Sydney can perform a range of roles in the electricity network.

    The core prerequisite units

You must complete specific prerequisite units before starting your L2 Electrician course. These units lay the groundwork for advanced electrical connection work, and include:

    • UETDRIS010 – Install and maintain low-voltage overhead services
    • UETDRIS011 – Install and maintain low-voltage underground services
    • UETDRIS014 – Install and replace energy meters and associated equipment

Once you have undertaken these units, you can apply for enrolment in an ASP Level 2 pathways course. You can obtain recognition of prior learning, and we’ll touch on this next.

    Entry requirements for licensed electricians

If you hold an ‘Unrestricted Electricians License’ or equivalent, you already meet the requirements for this course. However, those holding a standard electrician’s license may need to complete the unit to demonstrate currency. If the electrician has recently been employed as a licensed electrician, they may already meet the prerequisites. It’s important to note that all participants seeking Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) are still subject to the recognition process.
