Different Electrician Levels in the ASP Scheme
The NSW electrical supply and distribution network workers must be registered with the ASP scheme. Depending on the level of experience, training and qualifications a person holds, they may work at different electrician levels within the scheme. Governance of the network and its workers ensures safety on work sites and a reliable supply of electricity to homes and businesses. As such, it’s important to understand the types of work you can do relative to your accreditation.
In this article, we’ll explore the ASP scheme and how it applies to different electrician levels.
What is the ASP Scheme?
ASP stands for Accredited Service Provider. The NSW government administers the ASP Scheme, which requires all electrical supply industry (ESI) workers to register. Endeavour Energy, Essential Energy and Ausgrid are the three major companies managing the network in NSW. So, to work for any of these companies, you must be registered as an accredited service provider (ASP).
To become registered, you must show certain levels of competency and complete specific ASP training. However, there are different ASP levels that dictate the tasks you may perform. This is relative to the type of ASP training you complete and the ASP scheme registration level you obtain.
What are electrician levels in the scheme?
While they are sometimes referred to as ‘electrician levels’, this can be a little misleading. Many people work in the ESI without being licensed electricians. Rather, they are known as ASP levels. This is because electricians all have varying levels of skill and experience, but when they join the ESI, their role is determined by their ASP level, regardless of how experienced they may be as an electrician.
Let’s look at the three levels in more detail.
ASP Level 1
Level 1 ASPs must not necessarily be electricians but must meet certain electrical training standards. When working as a Level 1 ASP, your role is primarily involved in the construction of network assets. So, when it comes to extending the network to reach more properties, upgrading the network, or doing repairs, ASP Level 1s have a crucial role to play. They work on the construction of both overhead and underground network assets.
ASP Level 2
To provide connection and disconnection services to electricity customers, you must be registered as an ASP level 2. Your role mostly involves installing and maintaining underground and overhead service lines to connect properties. You’ll also connect service lines and properties, making their connections live. Level 2 ASPs also provide disconnection services and can energise and de-energise equipment.
ASP Level 3
As a Level 3 ASP, you’re involved in the design of network assets. Essentially, the role is to design overhead and underground infrastructure for the network. In simple terms, a Level 3 ASP designs all of the network assets that ASP Level 1s construct.
