You need to register as an Accredited Service Provider (ASP) to perform certain roles within the electrical supply industry (ESI). As an ASP Level 2, or L2 electrician, there are numerous career opportunities within the ESI. The work is varied, challenging, and crucial to NSW homes and businesses. Let’s take a look at some of the jobs you could do as an L2 electrician in NSW.

    Connecting and disconnecting power

L2 electricians are qualified to connect new installations to the power grid. This involves attending homes and businesses to perform all disconnection and connection tasks safely. It’s important to note that this and many other ASP Level 2 electrician tasks cannot be performed without appropriate training. For example, an ASP Level 1 is not authorised to perform connections and disconnections.

    Metering services

A level 2 electrician in NSW conducts a range of metering services for homes and businesses throughout the state. This can involve removing, installing and replacing electrical meters for upgrades. Modern homes typically require smart meters to cope with an increased electrical demand. Much like connections and disconnections, there is a customer service aspect to this role. As such, electricians must be personable, and friendly and be able to explain their work to home and business owners.

    Underground and overhead service lines

While level 1 ASPs can work on the construction of network assets, only L2 electricians can install, repair and maintain the service lines. Skilled technicians maintain overhead and underground service lines throughout NSW in excellent working order.

These service lines deliver electricity to homes and businesses, making them a vital piece of infrastructure that the state can’t do without.

    Temporary power supply

Often, a short-term power supply is required at a certain location. This could be for a major construction project, public event or something else that doesn’t require permanent electrical connections. In many cases, the event’s nature requires specific power solutions. L2 electricians set up and connect temporary power sources as needed.

    Fault finding and repairs

In such an enormous network as the NSW Electrical Supply and Distribution Network (ESDN), faults are inevitable.

These faults can occur anywhere in the network, so they must be located, assessed and repaired as soon as possible. This prevents extended power disruptions to homes and businesses.

Level 2 ASPs are often required to find faults and repair them, using a range of diagnostic tools and assessment processes. Level 2 ASPs must complete mandatory annual safety refresher training to ensure they manage repairs with safety in mind.
