    ausgrid standards

Ausgrid is one of the three electricity distributors in NSW and they have the responsibility of maintaining the NSW electricity supply and distribution network. Obviously, this work is extremely important in order to keep power flowing to homes and businesses throughout the state. As such, the Ausgrid Standards exist as a set of guidelines for all work that occurs within the network.

Whether you’re an ASP Level 1 worker constructing network assets or an experienced electrical engineer, everybody must follow these standards. Here’s an overview of the Ausgrid standards for ESI workers.

    What are Ausgrid standards?

The Ausgrid standards are a detailed set of technical guidelines that apply to all workers involved in constructing, maintaining, and operating the NSW electrical supply network. These standards cover everything from the installation of powerlines to the upkeep of substations and underground cables. For ESI workers, it’s essential to follow these guidelines to ensure the network is maintained to the highest standard, while also promoting safe work practices for employees.

    Why do the standards exist?

Maintaining the NSW electricity network is an extremely complicated task, which is essentially why the Ausgrid standards are in place. They ensure workers understand and can mitigate the risks of working with high-voltage equipment, while also making sure the public is safe.

Aside from safety, these standards also ensure that all installations, repairs, and maintenance comply with legal, regulatory, and environmental requirements. As such, they are critical for maintaining a reliable supply of electricity throughout NSW.

How Ausgrid standards apply to ESI workers

For every ESI worker in NSW, compliance with Ausgrid standards is mandatory. Whether you’re involved in design, construction, or maintenance, these standards apply to all tasks. Level 2 electricians installing new infrastructure and connecting customers to the network must follow the guidelines, as does every ASP Level 1 worker constructing network assets.

Compliance with these standards isn’t just about ticking a box. It’s a crucial part of maintaining your employment in the network.

Key areas covered by the standards

The Ausgrid standards are extremely vast, so it isn’t expected that workers know all of it. They do, however, need to know the guidelines for all of the work they do. As such, the Ausgrid standards cover all technical aspects within the electrical supply network. This includes overhead and underground cabling, the design and maintenance of substations, earthing systems, and environmental considerations. Safety is also a key part of standards, especially with regard to materials, equipment and hazard identification. Anybody working in the ESI must complete mandatory safety training in addition to understanding their roles and responsibilities according to the Ausgrid standards.

Want to start your career with an electricity distributor?

The Ausgrid Standards reflect how one of the distributors operate, however there are also Endeavour and Essential Energy to consider. They also have exceptionally high standards to uphold, so working for any of these companies requires sound training and knowledge. IAC Safety Services offers all types of electrical safety training to help you get started as an ESI worker. From mandatory ASP refreshers to ASP Level 2 pathways, we’re here to help.
